Softly undulating Italfim expanded metal mesh surrounds the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). This creates a series of different heights and sizes, making it look much like a huge fortress with an aluminium shell. Built on the site of the old Toni factory, the “Toni-Areal” is not just a place of learning, but an integral part of the city of Zurich. A welcoming, open space, the public is free to enter and exit the building just like any other part of the city. The Toni-Areal complex contains halls and classrooms with all the equipment required for students of figurative art, dance and drama, as well as concert halls, rehearsal rooms and theatres. There is also a big library and large multi-purpose areas capable of holding up to 3,000 people.
